Understanding GI
Unless you are living with Diabetes, the Glycemic Index (GI) is something that many do not understand.
Not many food companies have their products GI tested and therefore customers have no idea about the GI rating when consuming their products. Most people do not even understand how important it is.
The GI ranking relates to carbohydrates in foods and how they affect blood glucose levels. GI is an important tool for guiding food choices for people and many diets on the market are now based on the glycemic index.
Foods with GI levels of 55 or under (Low GI foods) are digested, absorbed and metabolised more slowly, which means a that blood sugars don’t rise as fast. This is very important for people who are overweight and living with chronic illnesses.
Here at Herman Brot GI is one of our 3 main nutritional numbers and it appears front and centre on all of our products.
All of our products are tested by SUGiRS University of Sydney who are experts in the field of nutrition and GI testing and If a product does not have a Low GI rating, it will not be included in our range.
All of our products have GI ratings that range between 22 (Lower Carb Pasta) and 35 (Chocolate Protein Muesli). These are very low figures when it comes to GI and the team at SUGiRS have deemed ALL of our current product range suitable for inclusion in the diets of people living with Type 2 Diabetes.
And when it comes to living with Type 2 Diabetes, Herman Brot founder Christian Coenen knows how important GI figures are because he lived with the disease for many years. He understands GI so much that despite what medical experts say about not being able to cure/reverse Type 2 diabetes, Christian followed a low carb, high protein, low GI diet (using Herman Brot Lower Carb Bread as his staple food) and did just that.
Unlike our GI figures, unfortunately, many food companies just squeeze into the Low GI category and even if their products boast a Low GI55 figure, they cover their packaging with labels and symbols that they have paid a fortune to be able to use and some don’t even disclose the actual GI figure on the pack.
Our aim is to always make sure that our GI figure is displayed front and centre on all packs and customers don’t have to go searching online to find the figure.
We are continually looking for new products to add to our range and one of our main missions is to create foods that are Low GI to help people living with Type 2 Diabetes. The more staple foods we can supply in the Low GI category, the more choice people will have for living a much healthier lifestyle.
